Hello!

I need a "testbed" single input pre-amp to evaluate various MM phono stages. I understand that the only way to get balanced outs with the "Truth" is to put balancing transformers on the outputs. OK, maybe a small compromise but necessary for me. So I am wondering: what advantage or disadvantage would this solution have over something like the Bent Audio Slagleformers that are naturally balanced already?

thanks,
Herman

Hi Herman, using xformers to get a balanced signal would be a compromise not worth doing. Many guys are using The Truth with RCA to XLR adapters. This works just fine and there is no compromise. The Truth running this way will be superior to any balanced pre amp anyway so why bother?

The design can not be made in true balanced config., just not possible without compromises in sound quality.

I'm not sure why a balanced signal is needed since isn't the output of a cartridge single ended? Now, if the phono stage is running in balanced mode , isn't it converting the singe ended output of the cartridge to a balanced signal? That's a real question, not a smart ass question! If that is the case an adapter could be used to invert absolute polarity if one wanted to.

I know nothing about the Bent Audio Slagleformers but I hear Dave is a really nice guy. John at Bent is as well!

Hope this helps!

Hello Ed,
Thanks for your thoughts! To be clearer in my requirements: the balanced out is not strictly required, it's just that I will have about 30 ft. cable run from the pre-amp to my amp. Will the Truth be able to drive that long of an interconnect properly?

The Truth is one of the best line stages at driving long runs of interconnect.

Just for fun, I tried my Truth with 18’ lines, the longest I had. No problem at all. I have several preamps sitting on the shelf, and only two were up to the task. One has about a 30 Ohm output impedance, and the Truth which I believe has about 2-3 Ohm output impedance. I’m pretty sure you could run fifty feet of interconnect, seriously. Comment on that Ed?
