1  General Category / Technical discussion / Re: Mini Enclosures for Fostex FE108E's? on: January 01, 2014, 08:50:44 AM
I saw those PVC speakers as I was browsing the web looking for ideas and was definitely thinking about that.

However, I was in a Salvation Army yesterday (constantly on the prowl for that killer thrift store record find!) and I saw a couple of single driver Sharp speakers that looked about the right size. (I'm sure this makes some of you DIY audiophiles groan!). I bought them and the Fostex drivers fit perfectly, I didn't even need to drill new holes. They are now on the windowsill and they sound a thousand times better than the Cambridge Soundworks speakers. Definitiely hearing that Fostex magic.

The speaker enclosures did not have any damping material at all, so I need to play around with that. The bass sounds kind of "plummy" when I crank them up but, again, I listen to them at very low volume in an extreme nearfield setting, so that's not a big deal. But I'm sure some damping will help.

I may ultimately end up playing with some other ideas, but then again maybe not!
2  General Category / Technical discussion / Mini Enclosures for Fostex FE108E's? on: December 29, 2013, 10:35:42 AM
I've had the original 108's sitting in boxes ever since I upgraded the drivers in my Horns. My bedroom system consists of a Tripath amp, a cheap DVD players (for playing CDs), and an ancient pair of Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble II speakers. The speaker are on a windowsill directly behind our headboard, maybe a foot behind our heads. Not an ideal setup, but nice to play very softly while reading in bed.

SO ANYWAY....I was thinking of trying to get some use out of the spare Fostex speakers and retire the old Ensemble's. The 108's would need to be in a very small enclosure. Are there any cabinets that anyone can recommend? Preferably something cheap and pre built? Or maybe a small open baffle design?

I'm not a DIY guy at all....replacing the drivers in the Horns was about as far as I go.

Thoughts or recommendations? Some unthinkable redneck contraption, like mounting them in an empty bean can covered with felt?  Grin

Just when I didn't think you could get any dumber, you go and TOTALLY REDEEM yourself.

One of the GREAT movies of our age!

"The Horny Heil"

I just pictured a leering Nazi sitting behind Little Miss Triode.

Ok I'll bite.

Any thoughts on the merits (or lack thereof) of cryogenic treatment? Is this legit, or snake oil?

7  General Category / Technical discussion / EL84 Tube Recommendations? on: February 18, 2011, 02:46:25 PM
You guys seem to know your tube gear, so thought I would ask for some opinions. I have an Almarro A205A Mk II that uses a pair of EL84's and a single 12AX7. Several years ago I replaced the stock tubes with one recommended in the Six Moons review: Cryogenic treated Harma E84L/7189As and a cryo'd NOS GE 5751. I ordered them from Watford and they were a bit pricey.

I've done a little poking around on the web, but most of the info on EL84's seems to be about guitar amp applications.

SO - any recommendations on some relatively inexspensive tubes?

AND - as long as I'm at it - how long should tubes last that get, say, 20 hours use per week? I assume that the degradation is slow, so may not be easily noticeable.

Thanks for any input!

Almarro A205A MkII

Got it the same time I got the was a good Christmas! My only tube amp so far, and I'm pretty darn happy with it.

What happened to global warming?

It's been abandoned for the far more likely "climate change".

Now you just need a cleaning person cleaning everything up and run all your wires in a more 'wife-approved-way'. Your equipment and rooms are too nice for all this exposed cable salad ;-)

I was thinking the same thing....It pushed the limits at my house to have exposed *tubes*, let alone all of that wire!

Music wise, I got the Doors mono LP, a limited edition 13th Floor Elevators 2-cd set (1st album in mono & stereo, with some bonus tracks), a Tripping Daisy EP, a Gamelan music LP, a CD compilation of 60's/70's Turkish psych, and the latest Tunng LP. And, yes, I bought every single one of them and gave them to my wife to give to me!

I also got a Spin Clean record washer system. I've never had a decent record cleaner, and I am *very* impressed. It did a great job on some grungy garage sale records. It's a bit of effort, but works great.
