Sorry for my late "RSVP", but I had to wait to find out my brother's plans. I found out last night that he's coming down from Ohio this weekend, so I won't be able to make it.

Have fun!

OK, D, just wanted to make sure you saw all eight amps.

Enjoy your project!

You're welcome for the link.

You did notice that he lists eight (Cool different headphone amps, some of them tube, didn't you?
4  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Used Crown XLS 2502 on ebay 04/10/2019 on: April 28, 2019, 08:32:48 AM
"less intrusive display"

I was VERY happy when I found out that I could completely turn off my XLS 2002 display. My God, is that thing bright!
On another note, I had to see if Ed was right about the sound of these Crowns used full range. I hooked the 2002 up to my Horns when I got it, and I'll repeat, "My God, is that thing bright!"

One last note, an FYI if anyone's seeking the information. Crown doesn't list the input impedance, so I wrote their engineering department. Their reply was:

"The input impedance for the XLS series is

Input Impedance (nominal) : 20k ohms balanced, 10k ohms unbalanced"

Not an issue when using The Truth, of course, but not good when using my tube preamps.

I don't know if you've already made your choice, Capt., but if not, you might want to check out some of Pete Millett's designs. (scroll down to headphone amps). He's well thought of in the tube community, and his boards are for sale on Ebay. I can't speak to the various headphone amp(s) sonics, but I built his solid state LR (no capacitors in the signal path) phono stage, and it's fantastic.
6  General Category / General Discussion / Crown Amp Sale on: February 03, 2019, 10:38:27 AM
Since I'm grateful to Ed and Steve F for their "The great Heil AMT is on sale" posts, I thought I'd (hopefully) return the favor to anyone powering Ed's FFRS subs.

Crown is offering $50 off their XLS amplifiers through February 28, 2019 in the US only.

Just an FYI for those who might be interested.

Update:  Could this be "bait and switch"? The link above shows, say, the XLS 2502 for $550 (list @ $600) but as an experiment I added it to my cart, and the price shows $600, but a new list price of $650!  I'd suggest a phone call to them if someone's considering a purchase.
7  General Category / Technical discussion / Re: The Great Heils are almost free! on: January 03, 2019, 09:24:29 AM
The drivers arrived packaged like a fine watch or camera. (Or at least the way I think such things should be shipped.) The drivers were double boxed over the original package. Impressive.

That's good to hear, Steve. I just got notice that my AMTs should arrive in about five days. Meanwhile, I've been studying the crossover posts here, and reading Nelson Pass' Current Source Crossover Filters article, trying to determine what I need, and getting my questions together prior to calling Ed.

Everything seems straightforward, so most of my questions revolve around my main amp, the First Watt F1J. According to Nelson Pass, caps look like inductors, and inductors look like caps to his amp. The "tend to" from the Pass quote below has me wondering if the crossover will be as simple as reversing the 5µF cap and 1mH inductor.

I guess I'll find out soon enough when I talk to Ed.

"It [the F1] does not work well with ordinary passive crossover networks – the
components and their locations tend to be reversed.  It won’t break, but
probably won’t sound good.  If you have an electronic crossover, you’re in
better shape, at least until I can finish a white paper describing passive
crossovers for use with a current source."

Tod, I got it right away, and I laughed.

Happy New Year EVERYBODY.

Glad to hear you got it, and were amused, Steve. Going for the laugh sometimes gets my ass in trouble. I spent so much time in the corner in grade school that my forehead grew into a wedge, but apparently I haven't learned a damn thing.

(including the reminder about your bout with a kidney stone. Ugh!).

I should share less.  The opiates make me free.  Good thing I didn't have the will to post when I was jacked on morphine.  Wink

My stone put me in the worst pain I'd ever been in, and the morphine they gave me at the Emergency Room gave me almost instantaneous relief. Rereading your old post made me get up and drink a big glass of water, 'cause I never want that experience again, so thank you for sharing! The only advice I haven't followed was from the ER doctor, who told me to cut back on coffee. Yeah, right.

Welcome to the club!  The cool thing is that you can play with capacitor values to suit your ears and room.  The stock values work well for most.

Thanks, Henry. I'm a bit late to arrive at this dance, but I'm looking forward to hearing what I've been only reading about for so many years. That's not entirely true. I did hear the Heil-Horn briefly at a HornFest, but it was only for one or two songs, then Ed and I went back outside to join the party. I heard them another time, again briefly, at Cheerwino's house. Speaking of which, has anyone heard from him? His last post was several years ago.

I just spent the last hour or so, reading archived posts regarding the crossovers (including the reminder about your bout with a kidney stone. Ugh!). Since Ed says his latest iteration works with all amps except digital, I'll contact him to get the most recent schematic.

I just pulled the trigger.

On the Heil purchase, not on the 15-22.

Thanks to Ed, Steve, and Henry for making me aware of the sale.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Ed, "thinking too hard" is what I do. But as noted, this is a state range, and where politicians are concerned, logic isn't always logical. I think the regulations are posted on line, so I will go look for them.

But on to more immediate issues, the Heils. I'll have to make up my mind on those tonight, or at the very latest, in the morning. I seem to recall you coming up with a crossover which would work with the First Watt F1J, correct? If I order the drivers, I'll get back with you about the xovers. Thanks.

Straight from the manufacturer.  Retailers are still selling them for list price.  Here's where they are:

Cheap is good.  Grin

edit... ESS is shipping free as well and that's really nice since these weigh quite a bit and the box is large.

Thank you Henry. I now see that Ed posted about this a few weeks ago, on 12/10, but somehow I missed it. The price is what previously kept me away from adding the Heils, but this nearly "too good to be true" price is weakening my resolve.
14  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Great Heil sale ending soon on: December 27, 2018, 08:02:22 AM
Hi guys,

Steve, I hope you know I was just having some fun. I'm assuming your "PSA" meant "public service announcement", yes? Since I live in SC, the first thing I thought of was Palmetto State Armory, a SC firearms company.

Ed, I will consider a can for my 15-22. The first thing I need to check on is that the state range I shoot at allows them. I would be surprised if they didn't, but I make no assumptions where politicians are concerned. For example, they don't allow tracer rounds or Tannerite targets,  so I don't want to make the investment in time and money, only to find out that I can't use it where I shoot most often. I'll have questions for you if I go down that road, and I certainly can imagine the benefits. Thanks for the suggestion. No sense letting barrel threading go to waste!

Now a question for both of you. Who's having a "give away" sale on Heils? I thought Parts Express was a dealer, but no sale there. As for the Heils, one of the main reasons I've balked at them is the First Watt F1J, which is still my main amp. If it were my only amp, I've read Ed say that he has a crossover which will work with it. But the thing is, it's not my only amp, which means I'd need a second, conventional crossover for those amps. The second reason has been the expense, given the condition of my upper hearing registers. Too much shotgun fun fifty years ago, back when using hearing protection was (you'll pardon the pun) unheard of.

Building the bucket subs is on my "to do" list for 2019, but if someone is damn near giving away Heil drivers, I'll take a look. Thanks.

And this seems like as good a time as any to wish everyone a healthy, happy New Year!

Hmm. I just bought a M&P 15-22 on sale at PSA, but I didn't see any Heil drivers there!
