871  General Category / The Great Horned Heil, AKA "Time Vampires" / Re: OK, so you have 5 pair of Heils wired in series/parallel, how would that be? on: June 20, 2011, 10:47:28 PM
... What I have to say is that listening to music got better the more we listened...

I think I know what you mean.  The Heils are time vampires.  I think that should be the new name.  Wink

I've been running through lots of my older lp's over that past week since I've had the Heils hooked up with the Model 2's (no black hole covers).  I've always thought one redeeming value of Rare Earth's Ecology album was the excellent recording of cymbals on "Losing You".  The Heils absolutely nail it in a very dynamic way.

And Led Zepplin's "No Quarter" never sounded this impressive... kicking and expansive.

I'm currently on a Little Feat binge, btw.  Lowell George RIP.

Hey Ed... it may be time to call Dad.  Smiley

BTW... Happy Father's Day to all you fathers out there.   Grin

So... I was there this afternoon and Ed did affix a box over the FE126 in a pair of Horns.  Just envision a pair of camo Horns with angular cardboard warts protruding from their faces.

Inexplicably (for me), that action increased dynamics as witnessed by the Rat Shack meter.  And, since Ed is an excitable boy, things eventually got loud.  Let's just say, with three tube watts the little Horned Heils played along cleanly having triple digit peaks and the corner-loading produced tight, solid bass.

We also played the Model 2/Heil (no boxes over the drivers this time) and they made three watts into a house shaking 100dB sustained party and I saw the meter routinely wander into the 108-110dB area.  Metallica never sounded quite like this in the pink room.

I am impressed with the dynamics the Heil/Horn combo delivers and I'm preoccupied with their speed and transparency.  I've heard some spooky realism on some passages I've previously neglected.  The Heils play very cleanly, so it's easy to get a little volume happy.

I'm looking forward to getting more time with them.  I'll just have to go easy on the volume.   Wink

I heard the Heil Horns on Sunday at Ed's and I was impressed.  I was a little worried that the Heils would sound a little forward or "hot" on the highs, but that wasn't the case at all.

Be prepared to hear more mid and high frequency nuances presented in a very clean, dynamic and natural package.  It's another step forward IMO.   Cool

I'm still stuck on the Woods extension cords from Walmart.   Grin

Randy, your ability to convey what you hear is masterful.   Cool

Thanks Jim for making great efforts to share the GM70 amp with the Hornfest guys and gals.  It really is a pinnacle product and the best I've heard.   Smiley

Nice job Guy, that President Harrison quote is perfect.   Smiley

...There will be no more Model 2 or 3's.
Over and done...... that said, both of those can be made into a completely over the top, completely insane speaker. Both would benefit from being able to xover (gasp!) the 126's at different places ( I have a plan Smiley )...

So... I've been contemplating going back to the little Horn and now this.   Cheesy

I really need to get down to Leesville soon.   Smiley

Hey Capt.,
I visited Edinburgh for only a week and I loved it.  I bet you'll enjoy it very much.

Just stay clear of the haggis.    Tongue

...tried to call Henry last night.

Hey Ed,
I'm at Hatteras until next Sunday, then I'll try to figure out a way to come hear these things.  The weather is perfect today, BTW.   Smiley

As usual, it was a fun, memorable time.  It's always great to see the familiar and a few unfamiliar faces.  Ed, Helen and Sid provide the perfect venue to lay back and let it happen, and I'm grateful for their hospitality.

Thanks so much to everyone for pitching in and being there.  I'm still grinning even though I'm getting ready for work.

The Hornfest was a fitting kickoff for the "Summer of Rob"!

Drive on, Robert.   Grin

Seeya all soon.

Hey Rob,

Sorry I can't do it, but as a substitute, I've arranged to have the red carpet rolled out and covered with rose petals...

Those guys at the Leesville Lodge are very accommodating.   Grin

Thanks to this being Mother's Day weekend, it looks like I'll be there on Saturday.  I'd like to come earlier, but I can't this year.   Sad
