Happy PI day.  I'll take mine in apple or sweet potato.
32  General Category / Technical discussion / Re: Little Schiit Audio DAC on: March 13, 2018, 09:04:00 PM
I gave the Schiit dac away.  After a while, it became a little troublesome for my situation.  The highs became a bit harsh and the imaging, mostly depth became a little flat.  It isn't bad and may work well in other applications.  After a few cable purchases and swaps, it was something that didn't work for me.

I have ordered a cheapo Topping D10 dac from Massdrop.  It seems to be good from the little I've read, but those guys are accustomed to laptop and phone audio.  If this isn't good for me, I'll have a drawing here for you guys to win a free dac.  Listen on...

Shingles is no laughing matter unless you are a comedian.  You should have gotten the shingles shot.  I did.  Please get well.

Yes on the shot.  I hope to in April.  I had a minor case and it will make you feel bad for a while.  Ed had something I don't want to experience.

Getting old has rewards and setbacks.  Here's to the rewards.  Wink

Ed, you're a lucky man having Helen and Sidney in your life.   Grin

Well, sometimes you can't go home.  He showed periods of awe, but otherwise, it was pedestrian Texas influenced mediocrity.  The venue is good and can make nice sound, but not that night. His ear piercing vocals were brutal.  Or, maybe it just wasn't his night or mood.  Or a sound man that was deaf.
The band was tight and scaled down to two.  I left a bit early and felt that I should have gassed up the truck for the price I paid to be annoyed.

The bad thing is I saw what Charlotte NC has become (nothing new).  Blah... murder... blah... hipsters... arena acts for mortgage money.

World class.

That looks great and I imagine it sounds great.  The Horns seem to be the best kept secret in audio.   If people dismiss them, they have upstream issues.  Very nice set up.   Smiley

Yea, I'm digging these guys.  All their stuff is on Tidal as well.  They do Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC and others.  They are from Finland and tour Europe often, but I think they've been in the States before.  I'd like to see them... another one for the list.  Wink

40  General Category / General Discussion / How was your experience? on: February 03, 2018, 06:47:01 AM
Rant alert!!!

Do you guys get tired of email and snail mail from companies you interact with?  Evidently the 2010's has propagated the touchy feely industry.  They employ legions of consultants and stat guys crunching numbers as to how shitty they treat their customers.  Every phone conference is recorded for quality purposes.  WTF.  It's everything from healthcare (the worst offender) to buying a car.  I'm bombarded by the bank and health folks constantly, and this effort can't be cheap.

Example: After my bank of 39 years didn't pay my property taxes, the guy said he couldn't help me and couldn't successfully transfer me to someone that could.  Then he said he hoped that I would give him an excellent score in the inevitable forthcoming e-mail survey.

They should just employ people that aren't assholes and do their simple functions. Damn.  If customer service is an issue, the supervisor knows.  Everyone is so pussyfied these days, they can't kick jackasses to the curb.  They want to have leverage from the victims to reprimand.

The State Farms Commercial playing "Don't you forget about me" Simple Minds from 1985 gets in my ear.

Yep, that's another catchy worm for sure.

BTW... I saw a Talking Heads tribute band (Same As It Ever Was) in Charlotte a few times and those guys do a fine job recreating their music.  I usually avoid tribute groups, but these guys were uncanny.

Watch out you might get what you're after
Boom babies strange but not a stranger
I'm an ordinary guy
Burning down the house

Hold tight wait till the party's over
Hold tight We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

Here's your ticket pack your bag
Time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far,
Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

All wet! Hey you might need a raincoat
Shakedown! Dreams walking in broad daylight
Three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees
Burning down the house

It was once upon a place sometimes I listen to myself
Gonna come in first place
People on their way to work and baby what did you except
Gonna burst into flame

My house! Is out of the ordinary
That's right! Don't wanna hurt nobody
Some things sure can sweep me off my feet
Burning down the house

No visible means of support and you have not seen nothin' yet
Everything's stuck together
And I don't know what you expect starring into the TV set
Fighting fire with fire´╗┐

Now go and play this, it's wearing me down.  Grin

I haven't seen Doyle 2.0 since 2001 when he opened for Eric Clapton.  His latest album is pretty good IMO, but skip the vinyl, it's a muddled mess.  I'll never understand how people screw up so badly on mastering an album, but think of what T-Bone Burnett did to the Leon/Elton record.  The CD or a Tidal stream is better.

Anyway, I get to see him in Charlotte on 2/16 and I got some good tickets for a reasonable price.  Looking forward to it.  The guy can really abuse an electric guitar and the venue has good sound.  Should be a good night...
