Title: Spotify audio SUCKS
Post by: Ed Schilling on January 07, 2018, 07:44:46 PM
Ok, Intel Compute Stick into 55" Smart TV, Stick is hooked to TV via HDMI. TV has optical digital output, this goes into our Cal Audio Labs DAC which is hooked to stereo. TV outputs all sources on the optical out.

You Tube audio is damn good. Spotify is unlistenable . I mean, so God awful bad it hurts my ears. How do people listen to this? The difference between the two is staggering.

I've not tried other streaming audio but all Movies and You Tube are pretty freaking good. Spotify on the other hand is simply awful.

Most everything running through TV is very, very good.

Anyone else have any opinions on Spotify vs. YT sound quality?

Hey Ed, I haven't played with spotify.  I use Tidal hifi because Best Buy had a deal where you could get 6 months free with a music purchase.  I just use a chromecast audio dongel connected via wifi.  It sounds very good as the Tidal hifi version is supposedly lossless files.  I haven't tried Tidal standard.

Tidal hifi costs $20/mo. and standard is $10/mo.  Tidal has lots of content, even some Truckstop Preachers tunes. I'll probably pay the $20 once the six month trial is up.  You may find Tidal free trials if you are interested.

Some of the youtube content sounds pretty good as well, but I don't use it much.

Hey Ed, I've been streaming Spotify (as well as Tidal which has higher rez than spot) through my two squeezebox touches>dac>truth>FW F3>GHH's for many many years.  In my system, Spotify doesn't sound bad at all...pretty good actually...Tidal a little better.  FLAC files also stream through my Squeezeboxes.  It's great to have so much music at your fingertips and Discover Weekly gives me a 30 song playlist which I archive.  It's nice to have a master playlist of some great stuff that I would never hear and if I like it enough, I will buy the vinyl (Transcendent Sound pre amp for my turntable) or buy the FLAC file through HD Tracks or just pull it up on Tidal.

Come to Houston and listen to my system!  Just watch out for the hurricanes.

I've been running Spotify through a Bluesound Node straight into my pre using analog input. I've been using this set up for a couple of years. Last year I logged almost 50,000 minutes. Mostly I find it sounds pretty good. However, like with vinyl,or CD,sometimes it's just not a very good recording. YMMV.
